Join YWCA Duluth for the first of their Raising Voices Speaker Series — an event designed to amplify the voices of modern-day leaders who educate, organize, and inspire action. Their inaugural speaker is Duluth’s own Heather N. Wilde who not only authored Floyd’s Baller alongside Adarryl Hunter but also published this young adult novel.
Heather will share the importance of writing this book at such a critical time in our history and an emcee-led conversation and Q&A with Rebeka Ndosi and Adarryl will offer deeper insight into the man behind the story. There will be hot beverages for everyone before and after the discussion and Adarryl and Heather will offer a book signing to close the night. YWCA Duluth merchandise and Floyd’s Baller books will be available for purchase.
See what happens with no rehearsal, no director, a different actor each night and a script waiting in a sealed envelope on the stage. Written by Iranian playwright Nassim Soleimanpour, White Rabbit Red Rabbit was conceived when he was barred from leaving the country for refusing military service. The play became a “message in a bottle,” communicating the lived experiences of an entire generation under harsh censorship. Since its premiere in 2011, this wild, utterly original play has been translated into more than 30 different languages and performed over 3000 times by some of the biggest names in theatre and film including actors John Hurt, Whoopi Goldberg, Nathan Lane, Michael Sheen, and Dominic West.

Erik Koskinen is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, whose music is not categorized by sub-genres. Stylistically he is on his own. Influenced by roots music of the Americas and the world, the rhythmic integrity and musical tone are as important as the lyrical content and the artistic intent. || Erik Koskinen’s Burning the Deal (released June 28, 2019 on Real Phonic Records/Tone Tree Music) is steeped in American roots traditions. Born in Fort Collins, Colorado, raised in Northern Michigan and upper New York state, then living in urban Minneapolis and now, rural Minnesota, Koskinen grew up with the rhythms of weather, factory towns, and farmlands. Koskinen worked in construction for years as he developed his music career, and he now resides on a farm near where he owns a recording studio in Cleveland, Minnesota, population 717.

ClimesClimes is a musical collaboration among five seasoned, Minnesota-based artists: Drew (songwriter, vocals, lute dulcimer), Clif Nesseth (fiddle, flute, guitar), Rebecca Alsum (cello), Steve Dalager (acoustic bass and vocals) and Zack Baltich (percussion). Climes showcases an Americana sound that bends and blends folk, rock and bluegrass. Lyrically, the songs are bound up in the issues of the day and the sentiments of musicians who seek a more just and inclusive world. We'll let the songs say the rest.
ELOUR(pronounced "allure") is what Elizabeth Ghandour categorizes as Femme Rock. Elizabeth’s direct lyrics, diverse background and classically trained voice, backed by master players including Ned Barclay on lead guitar, Anita Cracauer on keys, Joe Scarpellino on bass, Ryan Vee on drums, and Brody Kucera on percussion, pushes sonic boundaries for a raucous, rebellious, and yet very stylish sound that is simultaneously new yet familiar, and terrifically energizing.
The Desire StoreMinneapolis-Duluth band The Desire Store draws on the 25-year songwriting repertoire of Eddy Burke (vocals/guitar) featuring violin by his wife Laura Burke and saxophone by Jason Keppe; Jason and Laura alternate on the bass and cajon to hold down the rhythm section. Eddy’s background in the folk singer-songwriter scene, Jason’s foundation in multiple jazz ensembles and Laura’s orchestral upbringing meld to form an eclectic, versatile, genre-bending sound with three-part harmonies and plenty of sax for dancing.
