Since 2002, anywhere from 40-90 teams of rowers have been racing in the harbor near Barker's Island in Superior, Wisconsin for the annual Dragon Boat Festival.
As the name suggests, the boats are crafted in the likeness of dragons. "It's a 20-person canoe with a dragon head sticking off the front and a tail off the back," says Dan Blank with the Rotary Club of Superior. Each of the many races throughout the day includes three teams. "One of the team members is sitting, hanging off the front of the boat facing the team with a big drum between their legs."
Teams do get a practice run before taking part in their race. "The practice is super helpful," says Blank who also notes that experienced paddlers are there to offer guidance, particularly to the novice teams. Each team is guaranteed at least two races.
The event begins on Friday, August 25th with an opening ceremony that includes a "waking of the dragon," live music, and food. For anyone interested in participating, there is still time for individuals or small groups to sign-up and be assigned to a team. Find out more on the Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival website.
