John Beaton's journey with Fairhaven Farm began over ten years ago. "I kind of slowly grew it," says Beaton who began farming as a student at UMD. Through the years, Fairhaven has run CSAs, sold produce, provided starter plants, and a lot more.
Over the years, Pizza Nights have become a big part of what Fairhaven offers. "It's only one day a week on Friday evenings during the summer," says Beaton. "We take all of the vegetables that we grow and... incorporate those into toppings for the pizza." The tomato sauce is sourced entirely from the tomato crop at Fairhaven. The pizzas are also cooked in a woodfire oven on-site. During pizza nights, Beaton and his wife Emily give tours of the farms in the hopes of sharing ideals and the philosophies of organic farming.
Growing Your Good Life is a new opportunity that Fairhaven is launching this spring. The program involves an in-depth education about soil, crops, animals, and self-growth. "We are teaching people how to farm," says Beaton. "But there's one other component... using the farming season as metaphor for personal growth and development."
"I think the earth is the teacher, the soil is the teacher."
