Over centuries, the cyclical rhythm of the natural world has been disrupted by human development. Pollutants end up in our soil and water, and shorelines are quicker to deteriorate.
To push back against these symptoms, free workshops are being offered through the Carlton Soil & Water Conservation District. A free one-hour workshop on creating raingardens is happening on February 25th, and a similarly free workshop about restoring shoreline will be on March 25th. Both events start at 6pm at the Carlton Transportation Building.
The foundation of these landscape improvements begins with selecting appropriate plant life to offer the correct structural support while also considering local fauna. "We focus on native vegetation," says Cameron Gustafson, Water Resources Technician with Carlton SWCD. "That native vegetation helps also not only treat that stormwater runoff, but it also provides habitat, nesting, resting that's crucial for our native pollinators."
Each workshop is being offered free of charge, but attendees are asked to register. More information about the events and registration is available on the Carlton SWCD website.
You can hear Green Visions at 8:20am every Wednesday on Northland Morning.
