There's plenty to learn by sitting in a classroom, paying attention to the teacher, and scribbling down notes. However, some students from Harbor City International School (HCIS) are getting plenty of education by getting away from their desks and into the community.
"We've been given a lot of opportunities... we actual got tickets to go see Lawrence live and we got to talk to them about the environment," says Miirah, a student enrolled in the AP Environmental Science class at HCIS. The concert experience originated from a game called "Eco Tour" developed by Learn Fresh. The organization then provided the VIP ticket experience to meet Lawrence and see them perform in Minneapolis this past October.
The class has afforded students with opportunities to connect with community members and to explore environmental topics through various avenues. Earlier in the school year, students had the opportunity to travel to Camp Northern Lights in Babbitt, near the Boundary Waters through support from Friends of the Boundary Waters. This visit allowed students to better understand the effects of mining.
In many ways, things are just getting started. There's plenty of assignments and opportunities still to come, in the classroom and beyond. "I always want to learn more," says Francesca speaking of the future. "I definitely think environmental science will be a part of my life."
