Backyard Almanac: Sad Days to Glad Days

A spider web with dew drops hanging from it

In Larry Weber's youth, the waning days of August were known as the Sad Days. Summer sports were wrapped up, school was starting, and there was a glum feeling all around. But things have changed for Weber, as he now considers the end of Awesome August to be the Glad Days.

Some of the highlights from these Glad Days include growing numbers of raptors at Hawk Ridge (Broadwing hawks being the most abundant thus far) and a rare redheaded woodpecker spotting.

Beyond the avion world, Larry is also enjoying the squirrels dropping acorns, the spider webs glistening with dew in the morning sun, and a bevy of autumn wildflowers - as pretty as the roadsides look, keep your eyes on where you're going.

You can hear Backyard Almanac every Friday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
