Backyard Almanac: Early Birds

When you live this far north, Autumn has a penchant for arriving early. Despite that regularity, it can still be a surprise when those first signs of fall come into view.

Many birds are starting to pack up and ready themselves for migration. Some of the active birds in the area include nighthawks - a bird that, in spite of its name, has no relation to hawks, but rather a closer tie to whippoorwills. Also, keep your eyes open for loons that are gathering in area lakes.

This week, Larry Weber has also taken note of the active frogs, insects... and the changing leaves. Awesome August still has plenty of potential for heat and summertime thunderstorms, but signs of the changing season are all around.

You can hear Backyard Almanac every Friday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
