Backyard Almanac: Roadside Blooms

Awesome August continues. With nearly as much rain already this month as the entirety of July, the late-summer plants are flourishing.

Along roadsides, the goldenrod is tough to miss. Different varieties of goldenrod can be found in fields, swamps, and in woodlands. Goldenrod isn't alone in its abundance and variety. "I have seen, so far, seven kinds of aster," says Larry Weber. Additionally, Joe Pye Weed is another plant to keep an eye open for. The plant blooms with a purple flower this time of year.

The temps have been dropping, providing a sensation of fall. Other signs of autumn are not far in the future. Expect migration to begin in earnest in the next couple of weeks.

You can hear Backyard Almanac every Friday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
