Backyard Almanac: Some Birds Settling Down, Some Moving Out

It's been a hot July, but maybe not as hot as you think. The average temp so far this July is about two degrees above usual in the Northland, but there are still a few days remaining to bring that average one way or the other.

For the first time this season, fall migration becomes a matter of conversation. For some birds like sandpipers and plovers, the destination is South America, and the journey is a long one. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Gold Finches are just beginning to settle in. These birds wait for down from thistle in order to construct their nests.

Berries are in abundance. Raspberries, juneberries and blueberries are ripe now. Harvesting wild berries is a habit for some humans - and if humans don't pick them, something else will.

You can hear Backyard Almanac every Friday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
