The second annual Trails Fest is happening at Hartley Natural Area in Duluth on Saturday, August 10th from 10am-2pm. The event includes informational and educational tables, opportunities to test out different bikes, as well as plenty of time to hit the trails.

"Trails Fest is really meant to be a celebration, a celebration of trails and the recreational opportunities that they present, not only in Hartley Park, but also across Duluth," says Matt Willey, the Stewardship & Recreation Program Manager at Hartley Nature Center. "In some ways it's more than that. It's an opportunity for us to recognize the organizations and people who help make that possible in Hartley and beyond."

In addition to helping with the gathering this Saturday, Willey is frequently thinking about the future of trails and the ecological health of Hartley, especially in a time of changing climate. In recent years, Hartley has undergone changes in designation allowing for stronger action in this regard. "We developed a native plant community management plan that looks at the next 10 years of plant management in Hartley Park," say Willey. This process includes removing invasive species and incorporating plants that will thrive in a climate that may be vastly different in the coming decades.

More information about Hartley Nature Center and Trails Fest can be found online.
