Where's Art: Luminal Vignette

A painting of the Pink Panther holding a crystal ball up to a large figure in bunny slippers and large cartoonish antlers; blues, purples and pinks
Jonathan Thunder

Liminal Vignette by Jonathan Thunder opened at the Joseph Nease Gallery on October 6th and runs through December 16th. "[Thunder's work] draws from pop culture, they draw from his youth, they draw from his identity, they draw from fun colors," says Annie Dugan. "He talks about growing up reading MAD Magazine, collecting Garbage Pail Kids, riding his skateboard, going down to get the latest comic book, and sort of how that integrates with his upbringing on the Red Lake Indian Reservation... all of these things are sort of remixed in these wonderful, fascinating ways in his paintings."

Other art events in the coming week include Sharon Dawson's Above, Below, Within at the Duluth Art Institute. "Her work is abstract, but certainly plays on the space between abstraction and realism," says Dugan. Additionally, this Tuesday at 4pm is the opening of Along the Wayby Emily Anderson at Siiviis. Anderson's work harkens to the changing leaves that we're currently seeing in the Northland.

You can hear Where's Art every Monday morning at 8:20 on Northland Morning.
