At 6pm on Thursday, July 3rd, Dovetail Cafe is the location for an event for the Minnesota Million Project - an effort to reforest one million acres of state land in the next two decades.
The free event (hosted by Cafe Sci Twin Ports) will be led by Dr. Julie Etterson and Dr. David Beard. One of the ideas behind the Minnesota Million Project is to enlist small farmers and their land. "Given that the state can't grow enough trees to reforest and replace what we're losing, maybe small, sustainable farmers in northeast Minnesota can do the growing for us and sell the seeds for profit," says Etterson.
The program will begin with a short film made by local artist Dan Fitzpatrick title Helical Hymn. Art has grown as one of the ways to connect people with environmental issues and action. "All of these forms of art are ways to help recenter our experience of the environment and then from that recentering develop a passion to do something about it," says Beard.
Those in attendance will have the opportunity to help with the reforestation efforts by going home with a seedling for planting. More information about the event and about the Minnesota Million Project can be found online.
You can hear Green Visions at 8:20am every Wednesday on Northland Morning.
