For four years, images have been popping up on the sidewalks of Superior to remind residents of the importance of keeping water clean. And that idea is expanding.
The Storm Drain Art Project will be celebrating the latest artist installations tonight from 5:30-7pm at Empire Coffee at 1204 Tower Avenue in Superior. "Each artist designed and installed a mural, and it's their interpretation of what stormwater pollution prevention means to them," says Megan Högfeldt, Water Resources Specialist for the City of Superior. The celebratory event will include work from the artists, some complimentary food, and music by local group Similar Dogs.
And the project is expanding. Years ago, Charmaine Swan, Coordinator of the Northwest Wisconsin Lung Health Alliance, connected with Högfeldt to see if the same project could be done elsewhere. "I just loved the idea of somebody walking around town... and looking down and seeing this environmental art on the ground," says Swan. "It's been really a great partnership." There are now images adorning the streets of Ashland as well.
