Green Visions: Wrenshall Schools Transition to Propane Buses

Tim Herstad

As the Chief Operating Officer for United Truck Body, Tim Herstad has been busy visiting schools across the country, switching over fleets of diesel-fueled school buses to propane. Wrenshall Schools, among others, have now switched over fifty percent of their bus fleet.

With any investment, there are pros and cons. Propane is a more niche fuel to commandeer for vehicle use, and there are upfront costs in making the change to the actual buses. However, propane will burn cleaner and if there are leaks or breaks in fuel lines, the propane will have a less negative effect on the soil and water in the environment. Propane is also found to be more efficient in cold weather.

For someone who's closely watching the industry, Herstad sees the switch over to electric as a sensible step for private drivers, but not for large fleets - at least not yet.
