When prepping for migration, birds bulk up. But which is the most bulbous?
Fat Bird Week is back. The Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin has selected eight finalists for their annual single elimination tournament. Voting is underway through May 9th. To help decide which bird is worthy of being the Fat Bird Week Winner, visit the Fat Bird Week website to vote.
But the annual competition is more than just an amusing display of a Well-Fed Warbler and a Junco in the Trunko. It's also an opportunity to take action. Lisa Gaumnitz is the coordinator for Save Our Songbirds and works toward turning current tides in avion numbers and ensuring a healthy environment for birds that call the area home.
"Thirty percent of North American birds have vanished since 1970, and habitat loss is a big reason that that's occurring," says Gaumnitz. "People can add native plants to their yard... another way that we can help keep our birds healthy is preventing birds from flying into windows."
