Tips for Hardy Gardeners: Thinking Spring and Defending Flowers

Harvesting is wrapping up, save a couple tomatoes or peppers, and this week we're looking forward to Spring 2025. It's a long time before we get to enjoy the spring blooms of tulips and daffodils, but the time is now for those flowers to be planted.

Tom Kasper recommends planting the bulbs at least five inches deep in the soil - roots facing down - with a couple inches of straw or mulch on top for insulation. The insulation will help regulate the uncertainty of the freeze/thaw cycle and temperamental winter weather. There is a risk of critters digging up the bulbs, so make sure to transfer them directly from a bucket so as not to leave clues on the ground for the more deductive squirrels.

You can hear Tips for Hardy Gardeners every other Tuesday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
