It's harvest time! These days, the gardens across the Northland are nearing their terminus and produce is being gathered. And yet, while one aspect of gardening comes to a close, another may require some assistance in getting a good head start.
The cyclical nature of our world applies to everything. Though few are thinking about spring flowers, the plants themselves are already prepping for their lives post-winter. Summer squash is ripe for the picking... or is it? Tom Kasper recommends the fingernail test to see if your squash is ripe. Press a fingernail into the side of the squash - if it leaves an impression, leave the fruit on the vine. Don't waste a full summer of growth by plucking your squash too early.
