Tips for Hardy Gardeners: Planting and Picking

With the summer starting off on a damp note, some gardeners might be disheartened by the rot of their seeds or pests such as the Colorado potato beetle. Although it's already mid-season for gardens, there are still options to improve the quality of your harvest.

If some of your seeds have rotted due to the recent rainy season, you can reseed certain vine and root veggies in time for a bountiful harvest. Harvesting is also starting to happen for some vegetables. "Some gardeners are doing succession planting where they are harvesting their 28-day radishes and planting their carrots or harvesting their beets or turnips", says Tom Kasper.

When weeding, it is important to take note of the weather and time of day. With the summer heating up, perhaps think about weeding in the morning or early evening to avoid the hot sun.
