The idea of Victory Gardens began during World War I. Many farmers were enlisted to serve in the military. As such, community members needed to make up the difference in produce but creating and cultivating - and ultimately sharing - their crops. "At one time, Victory Gardens in the United States were producing somewhere around 40% of the vegetables that US citizens consumed," says Tom Kasper.
Every year, gardens can shine a light on the spirit of community. Sharing what we have, supporting our neighbors, and stepping up when we identify a need are all actions that can be seen in healthy communities. In light of the topic, Tom Kasper joined many others in making a contribution to The North 1033 during the Spring Fundraiser.
Whether it's Victory Gardens or listener-supported radio fundraisers, individual efforts add up to make an impact every day. To make your financial contribution, visit The North 1033 online.
You can hear Tips for Hardy Gardeners every other Tuesday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
