Tips for Hardy Gardeners: Prepping Vegetable Gardens

It's almost unnatural for folks in the Northland to be thinking about vegetable gardens in mid-March, but the weather is beckoning for exactly that.

Tom Kasper is viewing this time as an opportunity to get a leg-up on the season. Where to start? The soil. "We all have crummy soil," says Kasper of the ground soil in Duluth. Amending the soil or adding new soil to your garden is one item on the checklist that can be helpful for the future garden.

Interest in gardening has gone way up in recent years, particularly among younger adults. New gardeners can use this time to work on foundational elements, whether that's building raised garden structures, rehabilitating an old garden, or getting those nurseries going indoors.

It might not be time to plant just yet, but the sunshine is bringing a drive to garden - and there's plenty to do.

You can hear Tips for Hardy Gardeners every other Tuesday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
