Community Connection: Voyageurs Wolf Project

Voyageurs Wolf Project

Even if you're not familiar with the Voyageurs Wolf Project in detail, you've probably seen some of their findings. From time to time, videos of various woodland animals rolling in the leaves or frolicking in the brush make a splash on social media. "Even if it has relatively little scientific value, we can't help but find it amusing," says Tom Gable, Project Lead for the Voyageurs Wolf Project.

Historically, observing wolves has been a difficult task for researchers. Wolf behavior, and their role in ecosystems, is still something of a mystery. Despite relatively close proximity to humans, conclusions about the elusive animal don't come easily. And with 350 trail cameras in the far reaches of Northern Minnesota, Gable and others are looking for more than entertaining videos. "It's kind of like you're trying to put together this puzzle," says Gable about the scientific research. "Every little piece you get gives you just a little bit more insight."

For more information about the Voyageurs Wolf Project, visit their website (which includes a map of packs created through the use of GPS collars). You can also find and follow the project on various social media platforms. And if you're looking for an entertaining break during your day, check out compilations of trail cam footage on their YouTube page.
