University of Minnesota Duluth Senior Jake Olson has been the president of the UMD Clean Snowmobile Club for the past two years. In an effort to responsibly continue the recreational activity, the group focuses on creating snowmobiles to run cleaner and quieter.
The student group has an eye on the environment, but also on competition. The Society of Automotive Engineering encourages groups to enter and compete in a variety of categories. "We get scored based on our emission output," says Olson. Other scoring is based on performance and sound frequency - the quieter the better.
