The focus for Boreal Waters Community Foundation is growth and community. Right now, that progress can be noted in a variety of projects happening throughout the Northland.
"The Grand Marais Apartments - people are moving in now," says Shaun Floerke, CEO and President of Boreal Waters. "People should look at that in terms of a model of rural investment in a critical need; that being housing that ordinary folk can afford... They're really doing some neat stuff."
In the past year, Boreal Waters gave away more than $5 million in grants and scholarship and continues to create connections with other organizations in the area. Focusing on housing in downtown Duluth is a current big plan for the foundation, but they're also investing many smaller amounts in those with impactful ideas. More information about grants and scholarships can be found at borealwaters.org.
Additionally, Boreal Waters has also been hosting non-profit socials recently. The next gathering will happen at Blacklist Brewing Company in downtown Duluth on June 10th from 4-6pm. The event is open to representatives from any non-profit.
For the president and CEO, the importance of the community impact remains paramount, but the personal meaning is palpable as well. "It feels like this is why I was made," says Floerke. "It feels like this is why I'm on Earth."
You can hear Community Connection every Tuesday and Thursday at 8am on Northland Morning.
