This year marks 40 years of the Superior Hiking Trail. Back in 1986, a group got together to form an association to create the iconic staple of the area. Now, it's time to celebrate.
"There's so much to celebrate, so many people who've contributed to the trail in one way or another over the last forty years," says Lisa Luokkala, Executive Director of the Superior Hiking Trail Association. "This year alone we had over 600 volunteers give 10,000 hours." On June 6th, the plan is to have every portion of the trail hiked. Community members are asked to sign up to hike a section of the trail to ensure that the entire 300+ miles of the SHT are hiked on the day.
The day will culminate with four simultaneous parties at local establishments with some special guests. "We're going to have some local legends," says Luokkala. "We'll have folks who've held the fastest known time on the trail, we'll have some of our earliest board members, our founders there at the different parties... this is a time to hit the trail, celebrate and be together."
