For over forty years, the newly rebranded Boreal Waters Community Foundation has been committing financial support to projects aimed at community improvements in the Twin Ports. During those years, the reach of the foundation has expanded, prompting a name change that incorporates more than just the Duluth/Superior area. "We're in twelve counties, in two states, and seven tribal nations," says Shaun Floerke, President and CEO of the foundation.
Although the name has changed, the forward momentum of the foundation has not. Over the past month, Boreal Waters has distributed $2.3 million in grants and scholarships. "It's such a wonderful thing to be able to take generosity and share it broadly," says Floerke. Next up for Boreal Waters is the groundbreaking for an apartment complex to help with housing needs in Grand Marais. "We're always looking upstream."
