One hundred years ago in Duluth, residents gathered for an outdoor performance of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream in Hunter's Park performed by area youth. Now, a century later, Zeitgeist Theater is going into the woods at Hartley Nature Center with a group of young actors to perform that same play. "I can't get over that," says theater director Mary Fox of the serendipitous and unintentional timing.
Actors between the ages of 12-18 spent last week working with instructors at the Zeitgeist Theater on various different theater skills including stage combat, choreography and improv. This week, all of those skills were transferred to the Playscape area at Hartley Nature Center in preparation for this weekend's performances.
This particular version of A Midsummer Night's Dream aims to be less than 40 minutes in length. "It covers all of the things you want to know," says Fox. "That spirit is still there. It's high energy."
Performances will take place at 7pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 16-18. The show is free, but attendees are asked to register through the Zeitgeist website.
You can hear Community Connection every Tuesday and Thursday at 8am on Northland Morning.
