There's a bit of mystery to the history of the Swedish game Kubb. "It was rumored to be played by the Vikings... with the skulls and femurs of their enemies," says Shane Linge from Lake Superior Kubb. That's one theory. However Kubb came about, the game is catching on in the Twin Ports.
"We went to a tournament in Ely in 2019... absolutely got our butts handed to us," says Linge who helped start Lake Superior Kubb that same year. Now, Linge and company are at Earth Rider every Thursday to play and share their love of the game. Kubb is played on a "pitch" where teams face off trying to knock down their opponents five blocks ("kubb" is the Swedish word for "block").
For more information, visit the Lake Superior Kubb website or Facebook page. "If you're interested in a Kubb event... don't hesitate to reach out," says Linge.
