Eight writers. Eight directors. A whole bunch of actors. Twenty-four hours.
Those are the ingredients that make up the Chicken Hat plays that have been happening in and around the Twin Ports for the past two decades. All prompts for writers (who spend the night writing) are drawn from hats on Friday night. All directors draw from a hat to see which writer's show they will direct the next morning. "Saturday morning everybody shows up; directors and actors and very tired writers," says Brian Matuszak of Rubber Chicken Theater. "And once all that's done - boom - we just start working."
Costumes, props, learning lines, blocking the scenes, lighting, sound... it all happens throughout the day leading up to showtime that night. This Saturday's twentieth anniversary show will include special guest musician Dance Attic as well as 8 super-secret cameo appearances. The Chicken Hat Plays begin at 7:30pm on Saturday, June 24th at Harbor City International School. Tickets are available at the Rubber Chicken Theater website or by calling 218-213-2780.
You can hear Community Connection every Tuesday and Thursday at 8am on Northland Morning.
