Where's Art: Thinking of Spring

Paintings of yellow flowers against a green background of plantlife
Anni Friesen

No matter what it looks like outside, flavors of Spring can still be found inside at various locations throughout the Northland.

This Thursday, April 6th Wussow’s Concert Café in Duluth unveils art by LeeAnn Ilminen. Patrons can see mosaics made from glass pieces found along the shoreline, as well as large-scale collages constructed with images from National Geographic magazines. The viewing begins at 6pm.

On Saturday at 4pm at the Siiviis Gallery is the opening for “From the Forest Floor” by Anni Friesen who has created several watercolor images depicting vibrant plant life. “We might not be able to see wild flowers," says Annie Dugan about the current landscape in the Northland, "but seeing it in art gives us that soul-boost that we all need."

Up in Virginia, Minnesota is an opening for muralist Adam Swanson who has a penchant for mash-ups that can highlight the dichotomy between science and art, as well as humans and the natural world. The opening takes place at the Lyric Gallery on Saturday from 5-7pm.

Lastly, an exhibition at Fairlawn Mansion this weekend toys with a perennial treat. The 1st annual Northland Peep Art Show will feature artwork made by community members. All the art must be made of that Easter-time favorite - Peeps. Entrees are welcome through Thursday the 6th and can be submitted by adults, families, and kids The weekend event will culminate with awards in several different categories. “I’m so excited to see what people come up with,” says Dugan.
