It's a full week of art events in the Northland.
Thursday, March 9th starting at 7pm, the Rathskeller is hosting “Leaning North: The Art of Marissa Saurer.” Saurer, a Northland artist, has been traveling and creating work about her travels as well as about Lake Superior. Saurer's travels have taken her to Alaska, Lapland, and Iceland. “What I appreciate about Saurer's work is the sort of psychedelic energy behind it,” says Annie Dugan.
Also on Thursday, at 7pm is the launch for Julie Gard's new book of poetry I Think I Know You. The cover design for the book was created by artists Janelle Miller and Stacie Renne from Warrior Printress. For Dugan, the pairing of poetry and printworks makes a lot of sense. “It’s that wonderful relationship between symbols... and the word on the page,” says Dugan.
As the winter lingers on, some people might be making art of their own. On Sunday, from 2-4pm at Bulldog Pizza, Kara from Lake Superior Scandinavian hosts an earring making workshop. And looking further ahead, there are a few workshops at the Duluth Folk School coming up later in the month. Keep an eye out for classes on sketching/block print and Swedish folk art.
