Grand Rapids high school volleyball coach Rebekah Sutherland is no stranger to the sport. She played in both high school and college, but it wasn't her first sport. "I originally played soccer, and I quit because I hate running," says Sutherland. The size of the court and the limited running was appealing, and as her knowledge of the game grew, so did her interest. "There are so many different skills that go into volleyball."
In preparation for the state tournament, Sutherland and her team are watching film of their opponents to identify certain strengths, but she also recognizes the nature of the game. "We might take a few notes... but it really comes down to controlling our side of the court."
Sutherland is bringing the Grand Rapids team to its second state tournament in as many years. On Wednesday, November 9th, they face off against Mahtomedi at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
