Live from Studio A: The Roadside Lupines

Four smiling people stand in front of a grayish wall with The North written on it in blue lettering. The o in North is stylized to look like a compass. One of the people is holding a vinyl album with a picture of the band on it.

This Duluth quartet formed in 2023 when three college friends, singer/guitarist Riley Altier, singer/bassist Kati Devitt, and fiddle/mandolin player Jason Coyle, decided to start a band after graduation when they had more spare time. They soon added banjo player Jamie Sturlaugson and, like many groups, started out playing covers. Eventually they incorporated some originals and released a self-titled album in December 2025 with a mix of covers, songs penned by Altier, and one by Coyle. They joined us in the studio on June 22, 2026, to talk about the album and the origins of the band and to perform songs from the release. We talked about band members' musical backgrounds, including Devitt's time in her family's renowned polka band The Chmielewski Funtime Band, and about what's next for them. They will be opening for Sydney Hanson for Glensheen's Concerts of the Pier on July 22.
