Carl Crawford has been the Human Rights Officer for the City of Duluth for nearly seven years. When asked about the nature of his work, he often poses a question. “What does it mean to be human?” Crawford asks. He has an answer to his own question as well. "To have dignity, to have rights, to have the opportunity to be one hundred percent your authentic self."
From there, Crawford digs further in. "What does it mean to have rights? And who gets to decide? And then what happens when those rights are either taken away, stopped, blocked or impeded?" asks Crawford. "And that's where my work comes in."
Crawford's work has recently moved beyond Duluth. Recently, he was appointed by Governor Walz's office to the State Board of Public Defense. "What an absolute honor," says Crawford of the appointment. He's looking forward to learning more about the communities throughout the state of Minnesota.
