World Music Wednesday: Elephant Gym

World Music Wednesday is a weekly segment on The North 103.3 FM. Every Wednesday at 4pm on Northland Afternoon, we will feature a brand-new release or a significantly important past work from our vast library of music from around the world.

Support for World Music Wednesday comes from Simply Ballroom in Duluth's Craft District.

Today's World Music Wednesday will spotlight the music of Taiwan based trio Elephant Gym. Elephant Gym was founded in 2012 with siblings KT Chang and Tell Chang along with their classmate from high school, Chia-Chin Tu. The trio originally met in music club where they found they shared an interest in the same genre of music; math- and post-rock, which plays around with odd time signatures, and atypical rhythmic structures.

In The spring of 2013 the band released their first EP Balance. A year later in the summer of 2014, Elephant gym released their debut album Angle. Six months after the release of Angle, the band held a performance and released a short documentary named See You Then announcing a one year hiatus due to Taiwanese compulsory military service.

The band released their second EP Work, in the fall of 2016. Two years later, Elephant Gym would release their second full length album Underwater, which would be followed by a world tour including performances at SXSW and recording a live session at AudioTree. A few years later, in 2022 they released their third full length album Dreams. Recently, Elephant Gym released their latest album World on December 14th, 2023.

During their career, Elephant Gym has been nominated for numerous categories in the Golden Indie Music Awards. Winning "Best Style Category Album" in 2014 for their debut album Angle, and winning "Best Band" in 2019.
