"We really focus on keeping water clean for Minnesota's future," says Kelly Applegate, Commissioner of Natural Resources with the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe. "Everybody should have concern about the future of Minnesota's water."
In recent years, Applegate and others involved with the Water Over Nickel campaign have been pushing back against a proposed mine near Tamarack, Minnesota. "This area is very water-rich," says Applegate. "This proposed nickel-sulfide mine creates a lot of concerns because the track history of nickel-sulfide mining has always led to pollution and degradation of environment."
This summer, there will be a window for public comment regarding the proposed mine. To get connected with information about the Water Over Nickel Campaign and to stay posted about the open comment period, visit the Water Over Nickel website.
"The Mille Lacs Band will always prioritize our environment, clean water, the future of our collective people," says Applegate. "It's not just a concern for the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, but we really reach out and highlight the dangers of nickel-sulfide mining to all of Minnesota and beyond."
