On Tuesday, May 26th, Duluth Stream Corps with Community Action Duluth are inviting residents to participate in a tree planting event. With a goal of planting 3,100 trees in the Lester-Amity area, Stream Corps is looking to educate and to make an ecological impact.
"The goal of the project is to underplant black ash forests that have been impacted by Emerald ash borer," says Gabrielle Regnier, Program Manager with Duluth Stream Corps. "By planting our white pine, yellow birch, and red oak, we'll be increasing the native tree diversity which can help preserve the canopy cover and improve forest resiliency as well as reduce the spread of invasive species."
The volunteer opportunity is important not only in order to get the trees in the ground, but also to spread knowledge about environmental restoration, and to better understand the community work going into improving the area in many ways. "It's an opportunity to learn some new things about the natural world in Duluth," says Regnier.
The event kicks off at 10:30am at the Lester-Amity Chalet located at 2940 Seven Bridges Road. To learn more about the event or to sign up to help, visit the Community Action Duluth website.
You can hear Green Visions at 8:20am every Wednesday on Northland Morning.
