"We, since we've started, have gotten upwards of 20 tons of trash out of the creeks," says Julia Wisehart, Program Director with Clean Yer Creek, an annual clean-up effort focused on the many creeks in Duluth. "This is our 18th annual Creek Yer Creek event." The event begins at 9:30am on Saturday, May 2nd at several locations throughout the city.
This year, volunteers will be cleaning up six different creeks in Duluth, including Kingsbury, Merritt and Miller. Clean-ups are also happening at Lester, Amity and Chester, though sign-ups for those locations are already full. Supplies are provided for volunteers to safely take on the task of removing from these waterways debris that might otherwise end up in Lake Superior or the St. Louis River.
After the clean-up, volunteers are invited to gather and celebrate at various locations. "It's great to have the community come together. It's always a really fun day," says Wisehart. "People feel really encouraged about cleaning up our city, beautifying it."
More information about the event and sign-up details can be found on the Clean Yer Creek social media pages - they are active on Facebook and Instagram.
You can hear Green Visions at 8:20am every Wednesday on Northland Morning.
