"Our societies view the automobile as a prosthetic," says Tom Maloney. "We've built our world so that you need this automobile... the bike sort of cancels that."
Maloney is one of many who have turned a daily commute into an exercise routine, a positivity boost, a community opportunity, and a nature excursion. Even in the wintertime, you'll see him bundled up for his daily trek across town to Harbor City International School in downtown Duluth where he teaches. "I arrive in the workplace and I'm calm, rested, I've had my adventure, and it just really sets me in a good place."
Although there are some upfront costs, getting on a bike - even in the winter - can yield sights and experiences that an automobile limits. Maloney's tale about spotting a dancing otter on the ice at Miller Creek says it all.
