Community Connection: Duluth Sister Cities Fundraiser

On January 17th, Charlie Parr will take the stage at Sacred Heart Music Center in Duluth as a fundraiser for Duluth Sister Cities. The concert begins at 7pm with opener Jon Edwards.

Since 1987, Duluth Sister Cities has been making significant connections with cities across the globe. Currently, Duluth has Sister Cities in Japan, Russia, Iraqi Kurdistan, and Sweden. Recently, the organization lost a large source of its funding that used to come from the City of Duluth. "We have very low overhead expenses," says Executive Director Christy Rounds. Funds are used in various ways including for delegation visits and for scholarships for youth programs.

"The whole idea is that we do international relations one person at a time," says Tim Velner, Committee Member with Duluth Sister Cities. "We understand each other and we learn from each other." Cultural exchange in the past has led to infrastructure change in the area. A visit from a delegation from Sweden decades ago was the genesis for the Tech Village in downtown Duluth.
