Every year, Minnesota-based Climate Generation sends delegates to the annual Conference of the Parties (COP). This year's meeting - COP30 - took place in Brazil but went on without the usual presence of Climate Generation.
"What happened this year was an insane amount of price gouging," says Susan Phillips, Executive Director of Climate Generation. "Hotel rooms were charging $10,000 for one person for a week." The high price was too much for Climate Generation, but the organization was still able to stay in touch with what was happening at the conference.
Some notable news from COP30 includes a higher amount of indigenous representation and support. The adoption of a process for Just Transition also made more headway than ever before. "The really beautiful thing that happens at COP is that... [we] get to build relationships, we get to learn about how each other is crafting hyper-local solutions on the ground and maybe bring some of those ideas back home to their own communities."
Next year, COP31 will be co-hosted for the first time. The actual gathering will take place in Turkey with Australia taking the lead at negotiations.
