Green Visions: Projects and Plans with Students from Harbor City International School

Harbor City International

Many times over the past few years, Green Visions has highlighted the youth point of view regarding climate action. Frankie and Miirah, both seniors at Harbor City International School, made the return trip to The North 103.3 studios to talk about their academic pursuits as they pertain to environmentalism and sustainability.

This fall, Miirah and Frankie worked on environmentally focused class projects. "Everybody in the class has chosen one of the sustainability goals to focus on," says Frankie. "You create your own project to address one of the sustainability challenges and try to make a difference in your community." One of Frankie's focuses was regarding life below water.

Miirah took the opportunity to reach out to Duluth Compost to help local businesses around town to start composting. "It started with coffee shops so they can compost their grounds," says Miirah, who initially began this effort two years ago, but lacked the appropriate connections. Thanks to help from her teacher, Mr. Scott, Miirah has a better foothold to move the project forward.

After their senior year, both Frankie and Miirah plan to head to Europe to experience WWOOFing (Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farming). They hope to start in Italy and work their way around Europe.

For youths just starting to become aware of their potential impact on environmental issues, the two seniors have advice. "I suggest that you take advantage of all the resources that you have when you're in school," says Miirah. For Frankie, it's all about being inquisitive. "Be willing to ask for help," says Frankie. "Even if it sounds stupid, ask questions."

You can hear Green Visions at 8:20am every Wednesday on Northland Morning.
