Tips for Hardy Gardeners: Patience with Planting (Plus Glow-in-the-Dark Flowers!)

Timing is everything in gardening. For some activities, the time has passed. For other activities, the time has yet to arrive.

Pruning fruit trees is one such activity that should have happened over the last few months, but not now. At this point, pruning would likely do more harm than good. For spring flowers, like tulips, the time for planting is not now either. If you're enjoying new tulips in your garden, you likely planted them in the fall.

For most vegetables, don't be too eager. With chances of frosty nights still ahead, getting seeds in the ground could also be damaging to the future crop. Waiting until after Memorial Day is a good rule to adhere to.

And if you're looking for something new and off the main path, check out glow-in-the-dark flowers. By utilizing elements of certain mushrooms, science has found a way to ensure that flowers look nice in the daytime or the night.

You can hear Tips for Hardy Gardeners every other Tuesday at 8:20am on Northland Morning. Tips for Hardy Gardeners receives support from Grow Your Own Garden Supply in Duluth's Lincoln Park Craft District.
