Tips for Hardy Gardeners: The Many Garden Uses for Hydrogen Peroxide

The first bugs and flowers are starting to jump out in front of us as Spring begins. According to our Master Gardener Tom Kasper, there is one household chemical that can assist with both of them: Hydrogen Peroxide.

H202 is not only good at disinfecting wounds, but disinfecting tools too. If you are ever worried about spreading disease from one plant to another, spray some diluted hydrogen peroxide on it. It can also be used as everything from a weed killer, seed starter, soil oxygenator, fungal control, and insecticide.

How is this all possible? Kasper says the key is the concentration. Its use as a weed killer requires a strong concentration (about 10% in a water solution) than controlling pests (less than 1%).

You can hear Tips for Hardy Gardeners every other Tuesday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
