Backyard Almanac: So long to a Scorching September

September has been a hot one, and unless things change drastically, it'll go down as the hottest September ever. Although no individual day set a new record, the string of hot days and lack of frost and snow will put 2024 in the record books.

Despite the heat, autumn moves slowly forward. Signs of fall are all around, though some of the usual leaf color is seemingly delayed. The yellows that are usually quite prevalent in late-September will probably be more abundant in the early half of October.

In the meantime, there are plenty of migrating animals to keep an eye out for, including snakes and caterpillars - both are on the move and looking for places to hibernate.

You can hear Backyard Almanac every Friday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
