Backyard Almanac: A Little Bit of Rain and the First Glimpse of Fall

The shower on Wednesday night brought some much-needed rain, but August is still below average for precipitation. Another shower that didn't have much impact was the Perseid meteor shower; it was largely cloudy for the annual spectacle.

Other news from the air includes migration. Hawk Ridge has official begun their bird count. Chimney swifts and various warblers are just a few of the birds already making their way south. Larry Weber has been keeping an eye on a loon family. "As recently as yesterday, the young were... diving under," says Weber. This is a sign that the young are becoming self-sufficient. The adults will begin their migration before the youths.

Spider webs continue to be an August attraction. They're still a sight to see in the morning dew and sunlight. Another sight that some might be less excited to see are the changing leaves. Autumn is just around the corner.

You can hear Backyard Almanac every Friday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
