For Duluth walkers, the way has become somewhat dicey.
“If you walk around Duluth, you realize we have a long, long way to go,” says Alice Tibbets, creator of the Facebook group We Walk Duluth regarding residents and businesses clearing sidewalks of snow for adequate use. “We need to be thinking about what all Duluth residents need.” Sidewalks that have not been cleared of snow can make walking difficult or impossible. Inaccessible sidewalks can also lead to dangerous choices from pedestrians. When sidewalks aren't shoveled, walkers may take to the street, even on busy motorways.
We Walk Duluth is focused on encouraging walking in Duluth while also educating. Sometimes misconceptions can keep people from making the choice to walk, bike, or take public transit. “Being a hilly city is not a deterrent,” says Tibbetts. "We have a pretty good transit system with bike racks on the buses... we have 7,000 transit riders every day in Duluth."
