Art Night Out is happening this Thursday, August 13th. For the Duluth Art Institute (DAI), there will be two exhibitions on display.
The new exhibit Send Flowers is a collaboration between Cody Paulson and Stephen Pestalozzi. The two have worked together for DAI exhibitions in the past. "It's really neat to see their evolution as graphic artists, as artists, as visual thinkers," says Annie Dugan. The exhibit is comprised of many flower-themed postcards. The arrangement of postcards is a fleeting one though. Visitors are asked to pluck a postcard, write a message, then send it to a recipient of their choice. Due to this process, the exhibit will change as the "petals" fall from the stems, potentially making it an exhibit to revisit and see how it has changed.
Also up at DAI is a behind-the-scenes look at Ish Meets a Mermaid. Directed by Jonathan Thunder, the film has been getting attention at film festivals. "These artists came together to reimagine this Ojibwe story," says Dugan. The exhibit includes original props, storyboards, costumes, and stories from the production. There is also a chance to talk to the creators and to see the film.
Another highlight from Art Night Out is an open house in Knife River at Sarah Seidelmann's studio. More information about the open house can be found on Seidelmann's Facebook page.
