The Superior Hiking Trail Association has named Sam Zimmerman as their 2026 Artist of the Year. "Sam is such a perfect choice for this," says Annie Dugan. "He weaves together stories... our relatives... the natural world is part of that." The Ojibwe artist had been living on the east coast for some time before moving back to create images that reflect the natural beauty of the Northland. More of Sam's work and information about the artist can be found through social media.
And today, there are plenty of opportunities to make art of your own. At the Duluth Public Library, it's Maker Mondays for Kindergarten through 6th grade students. Sheila Staubus is offering a beginning clay class at Spirit of the Lake Community Arts. Waterstop Infoshop has a drop-in event from 2-4pm today (Monday, June 29th) and Northern Exposure has a painting class today and ongoing classes through the summer. Additionally, Island Lake Inn is offering a tote bag sewing class.
You can hear Where's Art every Monday morning at 8:20 on Northland Morning.
