When you imagine the future, what do you see? Is it hopeless and dystopian? Is it a sprawling landscape of sentient technology? Or is it something else?
"This inevitable future that either has technology saving us or everything going to hell and us ending up in a scorched earth path is a false imagination," says Thomlin Swan. "Ancient Futures is a way of reclaiming our imagination about the future... we are all descended from indigenous cultures that knew how to sustain the conditions of life that supported all beings in all communities for millennia."
The Future is Ancient is a new exhibition at Waterstop Infoshop in downtown Duluth that invites artists of all abilities and experience to imagine the future and express those ideas through their artwork. Paintings, drawings, sketches, photographs, poems, sculptures and textiles can be submitted for consideration to the exhibit.
The rolling deadline for submissions remains open through July 31st. There will be a soft opening on June 30th and a closing event on Labor Day. The exhibit can be experienced at Waterstop Infoshop at 20 North 2nd Avenue East in Duluth. Submissions can be made via the Waterstop Infoshop website.
Beyond the exhibit, the Waterstop Infoshop space is open and available for multiple purposes. "The concept is it's a free or low-cost community third space where people can come and be... be teachers, be learners," says Frankie Felegy. "It's everyone's home in Duluth."
You can hear Community Connection every Tuesday and Thursday at 8am on Northland Morning.
