This Saturday night at Harbor City International School, eight new plays will premiere. And considering that none of the scripts exist yet, several writers, directors and actors are on the clock.
That's the beauty of Rubber Chicken Theater's Chicken Hat Plays. On Friday night, writer's pull prompts from hats which they then use to create short plays. Early the next morning, the scripts are handed off to performers who spend the day learning their lines and make character choices, and to directors who gather props and work through tech cues. By that night, it's showtime.
"We're very excited," says Brian Matuszak, Executive Director of Rubber Chick Theater. "These plays do not exist yet." Matuszak and a rag-tag group of brave theater artists have been bringing the magic and antics of this event to local audiences since 2003. Although the plays used to happen multiple times each year (and for a while, they made a weekend of it with 16 new plays in two days), they've become a one-a-year June tradition.
The eight plays premiere at 7:30pm on Saturday, June 13th at the Harbor City International School Theater on the second floor. For more information about the Chicken Hat Plays or to get tickets, visit the Rubber Chicken Theater website.
You can hear Community Connection every Tuesday and Thursday at 8am on Northland Morning.
